Staff Biography - Liam Rawlings
In detail, what is your role at Think IT?
I am essentially a call taker but my role at Think IT is a Customer Service Representative, which means that I work in a triage-like role to log issues from clients and pass them through to techs. As well as that, I handle a number of other responsibilities, such as monitoring server backups, and doing various pieces of administrative work. It seems that most days I'm doing something new, which keeps the role refreshing and interesting!
What is it that drives and encourages you within your work and personal life?
I think just wanting to improve is what encourages me the most at the moment. When I'm able to develop my skills or simply do a job or task better than how I was able to do it before, I feel immensely satisfied. It also motivates me to keep improving to get even better!
Who, or what, was the biggest influence in your career today?
Its an odd one, but when I think about the influences on my very young career, I'd have to say that the person who's lessons have often had the most resonance with me is my grandfather. I remember as a kid watching him working on restoring his old MG car, and one thing that sticks with me was his insistence on always doing a "proper job" (i.e. making as much of an effort as possible with the work you are doing). Whenever at work now, I try to follow his advice and always do the best job possible
Whose biggest fan, are you?
It's a bit of a cliché, but I'd have to say Kobe Bryant. As someone with a tireless work ethic and brutally competitive nature, Kobe represents a lot of skills that are useful on the basketball court, but also very transferable to everyday life. Always putting in 100% effort and having a winning attitude are immensely valuable lessons that I've learnt from his career.
What accomplishment are you most proud of within your job role at Think IT?
I think it's hard for me to single out one large achievement that I am particularly proud of, but I take pride in having customers who are satisfied with the service they have received. If I can ensure that a particularly urgent issue gets looked at quickly or that a suitable resolution is found for an issue affecting a customer, I always feel proud of a job well done.
What technology most excites you?
For me I think AI is the most exciting developing area of technology. AI represents the next enormous leap in human development, and I think it can be hard for us to comprehend just how big of a leap forward we will make with AI. AI's ability to learn quickly and work at an incredible pace will enable us to produce some of the greatest innovations and technical leaps in the history of the human race.
What areas should business be focussing on when it comes to technology?
There are endless technical solutions to a range of specific problems that businesses experience, so I don't know if I'd be able to name one specific area for businesses to focus on. I would say that embracing technology as a whole is the key. Often I think businesses can be apprehensive about the difficulty or cost of technology, without considering the enormous value it can generate for them. By embracing technology and being willing to try new technology, businesses can keep themselves on the bleeding edge of innovation, and be well equipped to generate more value for themselves and their customers.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I'm a student, therefore most of my time is spent studying, but aside from that I am heavily involved in (both at an organisational and participatory level) Auckland Debating. I spend vast amounts of time organising and participating in various debating related events. I also love watching American Football and Basketball, and I play a bit of poker in my spare time.
If you could gain one super-human power, what would it be?
Although it is biologically incorrect, my super-human power would be an ability to enhance brainpower, similar to the way it is demonstrated in the Limitless movie and TV series. It would be an awesome ability to have.
